A pragmatic analysis of students’ complaints and professors’ responses to complaints: A case study of an Egyptian private university

The current study aimed to examine how university students complain and professors respond their complaints. Data were collected from 40 undergraduate at a private Egyptian using role-plays. Students’ complaints coded with the use of an adapted version Trosborg’s (1995) coding scheme for complaint strategies while professors’ responses based on Laforest’s (2002) model complaint-response strategies. results showed that half students’ came in form requests repair. This was followed by expressing disapproval, making accusations casting blame. As professors, they mostly partially accepted through justifying themselves, suggesting alternatives setting conditions future acceptance. Interestingly, social variables gender age did not generally have influence realization speech acts responding
